Learning Baby Sign Language, Teaching Baby Sign Language

April 3rd, 2011

Does the idea of working with parents and their babies interest you and suit your skills? What if you could start a home business offering a very rewarding service to families who want to teach their children sign language as babies?

It is becoming more and more popular now because so many people are realizing the benefits of signing with their babies. Parents are jumping at the chance to teach their hearing babies how to sign using Sign Language. Babies as young as 6 months old are telling their parents they hurt and need medicine before they are able to speak any words. Think about how less frustrating your life as a parent would be if your baby could tell you what was wrong with them?  That is why there is such a great interest in this early communication.

Due to recent media coverage, parents and daycare providers are wanting to teach their babies and toddlers baby sign-language. This has created a demand for baby sign language instructors which gives you an opportunity to teach others what you have learned.

There is no experience or educational background necessary to teach baby sign language so you can get started learning it now. All you need is a love of babies and the desire to teach parents how to better communicate with their baby.  Then you can learn what you need to and teach others.  Here is the baby sign language course I suggest to get started.
Baby Sign Language Increases Trust and Decreases Frustration

Babies actually have a lot to say, but it takes many months before they can manipulate their little mouths, jaws and tongues to form words and actually speak.  Now signing is not just for deaf babies, it is simply a way they can communicate earlier than they can form words.  When a hearing baby learns sign language, he gains the ability to communicate before he can speak and many times will even learn to talk sooner than a non-signing baby. One mom of a signing baby confirms that recognizing a baby’s first sign to you can be just as exciting and rewarding as a first word.

Researchers tell us that the early years are prime time for acquiring language skills so that is why you can start early teaching your baby to sign. It has been proven that baby sign language does not delay speech. In fact, hearing children who learn sign language have been shown to have a larger vocabulary when they do begin to speak and they have scored as much as 12 points higher on IQ tests in later years.  Plus some will even begin to speak earlier.

Most importantly, baby sign language increases trust between parent and child.  And it helps to decrease frustration for young children who cannot yet communicate vocally with words. Even older children love the “secret” communication that they can have with their parents in even the quietest of places because they can use their hands to “talk” to you.  It has also been reported that older siblings who sign with their baby brother or sister benefit from the early communication and sibling rivalry is reduced so what a great thing to do for a whole family to learn.
Teaching Baby Sign Language

When the baby waves Bye-Bye, then they are ready to begin other signs as well. This indicates that they have the ability to make motions with their hands to communicate to you.  Be sure to speak the word as you sign it. Then show the baby how to do their hand sign.  The important thing to remember is to constantly repeat and practice so your child can learn the signs and be able to remember them.

There is no doubt that baby sign language helps cement the parent-child bond with early communication skills that could last a lifetime so why not start helping other families by giving them this communication. What a fulfilling way for a mom or anyone who loves babies to earn money at home while helping others learn baby sign language!

Baby Sign Language: Communicating Before They Can Speak

April 2nd, 2011

Prior to mastering the art of speech, during the first year of live, your baby often will have great difficulty in communicating his/her needs to you. This can cause frustration for you both – yet there is a solution. Baby sign language is rapidly becoming popular as a means of recognizing – and responding to – a young baby’s needs.  You can start signing with a baby in order to communication before they are able to form words.

Babies can be taught sign language from any age, but they really begin to take notice of the signs from around six months and may begin using them from as early as seven to eight months of age. As many parents will testify, babies understand an awful lot more than they are able to communicate through speech at this stage which is why signs can be used at such an early age.

Some parents fear that using baby sign language may hamper their child’s speech development later on. Research into this subject, however, shows that children taught baby sign in infancy actually go on to develop superb language skills. In some cases, they may learn to speak earlier and often have an increased ability to learn a second language, so there are many benefits of baby sign language that you might not have realized.

There are other benefits to introducing baby sign language – studies indicate that children who sign often develop a higher than average IQ. The major advantage for parents, of course, is to be able to identify their babies’ needs and respond appropriately – easing the frustrations that can lead to tantrums. Once this channel of communication is open, many parents feel that a deeper bond with their child is formed, creating a great sense of harmony.

There are various methods by which you can learn to sign with your child – no prior knowledge is needed, so learning along with your baby is part of the fun! It is important to remember to say the word when introducing any signs to your baby and to use the signs consistently – both in the home and outside it. Also, try to familiarize anyone who cares for your child with the signs they are using.  It is very important to remember that you have to participate with your child and not just sit them in front of a tv with a DVD hoping they will pick it up.

Some people like to invent their own signs to use with their babies, whereas others prefer to use conventional signs based on formal sign language – the advantage of using these is that they are recognized by a wide group of people so many people will be able to communicate with your child as well. There are many books, DVDs and flashcards available, based on formal signing, that make learning this new skill both simple and enjoyable for babies and parents.

Taking into account the benefits that this simple communication with your baby can bring!  It’s no wonder that more and more parents are using baby sign language – and achieving a fascinating insight into their babies’ minds!
